catb 38: Live From Baku!

The finals of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest were held this past Saturday. This year the contest was held in Baku, Azerbaijan as a result of that country's big win in Germany in 2011. It was a festive occasion at CATB HQ. We had the live stream running and our tally sheets filled out and ready to follow the scoring. Of the 26 songs competing in the final, my favorite song didn't fare that well. I had Ireland at number 1 with Jedward's "Waterline". The twins finished a disappointing 19th place with 46 points (ouch!). I did better with my number 2 choice, Russia's Buranovskiye Babushki (aka The Russian Grannies) with "Party For Everybody". They finished the contest in second place with 259 points! Score one for me and crack open a Yeungling! The rest of my top 10 went as follows: 3: Estonia with "Kuula (Hear Me)" by Ott Lepland (he finished at #6 with 120 points) 4: Sweden with "Euphoria" by Loreen (the contest winner with 372 points!) 5: Denmark with "Should've Known Better" by Soluna Samay (#23 with 21 points) 6: France with "Echo (You and I)" by Anggun (#22 with 21 points) 7: Cyprus with "La La Love by Ivi Adamou (#16 with 65 points) 8: Hungary with "Sound Of Our Hearts" by Compact Disco (#24 with 19 points) 9: Germany with "Standing Still" by Roman Lob (#8 with 110 points) 10: Albania with "Suus (Personal)" by Rona Nishliu (#5 with 146 points). So all in all I did ok, 5 of my top 10 picks finished in the actual top 10, including the wining song! I feel bad for Jedward tho. They really did put on a great show.

  1. What I find ineresting is that Norway had an similar contestant to Sweden (Sweden’s singer has origins from Marocco, while Norway’s had from Iran), yet they got THE bottom placement with 7 points total. We Norwegians don’t understand how that could happen. Bottom placement has happened to us once, and that time we got no points at all.
But Swedens song is a worthy winner, and was actually a hit here in norway before Baku…

    1. I love Tooji! I was surprised he finished so low.

  2. I would SO be playing softball rather than watching soccer.

    1. Jack, I just realized you refer to the Eurovision Song Contest as a soccer game! Too funny! Well, it’s not a soccer tourney. It’s 42 different countries submitting a song to compete in an international music extraviganza! Check out this link for more info: Eurovision 2012

      1. Ha! I’m such an ass! I take back my original comment. I’m all about the Eurovision Song Contest. That sounds rad!

  3. Great comic!
    My favorite was Estonia!

    Greetings from Germany
